Turners-up take their chances on no-shows, of which there are always a handful. How long does the Festival last? It runs over three evenings in a single week. We tried Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings in , and felt that Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings worked better — if only for London commuters. How long is each concert? The church opens at 7pm seats are not reservable ; each concert starts at 7.
Where does the ticket money go? Primarily, it meets the costs of the Festival. Is the Festival held twice a year, or every two years? Would I be bored at Bramley …? Members of the Festival audience come from London, Southampton, Reading, High Wycombe, Portsmouth and many villages surrounding Basingstoke, but most are Bramley residents or live in neighbouring hamlets and villages — and the majority probably would not describe themselves as especially knowledgeable about classical music.
They love the Festival, and so will you. Is there adequate parking near to the event? Are children welcome? Absolutely, but the Music Festival is undeniably a grown-up event and toddlers are unlikely to enjoy it much. Can I take pictures during concerts? But no one will mind if you snap away when the performers take their bows; and the church, beautifully decorated by the ladies of the local floral society, is certainly worth picturing before the music gets under way.
Is it possible to reserve seats? Claire Jones , former official harpist to the Prince of Wales then entertained us, along with pianist Maite Aguirra in her third visit to the Festival. In the villages welcomed back their very own superstars from earlier years: Voces8 , Fine Arts Brass , and The Tenorissimi with pianist Maite Aguirra.
In , the talented Madalina Rusu stood in at very short notice for Evelina Puzaite stranded in Scandinavia following a piano competition and the festival moved up a gear with the first appearance of Fine Arts Brass — arguably the best brass quintet at work in the UK — and the thrilling and innovative a cappella ensemble Voces8.
The first events, in and , will be especially remembered for the singing of David Stout, the violin playing of Nadia Wijzenbeek, the piano playing of Martin Sturfalt and Evelina Puzaite , and the verse and readings of actors David Robb and Briony McRoberts. Claire Jones , harp with Chris Marshall , percussion provided a fascinating and entertaining ptogramme to showcase how their instruments can work together. Graffiti Classics again blew away the audiencew with their wit and skill.
