My name is Debbie Scott and I am the social media person for the World tournament. The company hired to promote the tournament is the same one that did the Wells Fargo PGA tournament here in Charlotte.
If you are invited to play -- You have to be here! If there is space available -- You have to sign up! Don't miss this historic event! What, no Allison?! That's sad. Is it due to time constraints? Welcome to dgcr, I think we're all looking forward to worlds.
Yes, Allison is off because it will not be completed and approved in time, but we get Reedy Creek on the list! As far as schedule being released -- look for it by the end of this month. Invitations will be sent out in the beginning of March and registration will open shortly afterwards.
Then in the beginning of May, it will be open for the remaining slots to any current PDGA member that has passed the official's exam gots to know the rules, or at least how to look them up if need be. It should be a grand affair!! Don't miss it! Can't wait to watch the pros in person.
And do better than the last 2 Am Worlds. Version 1. Links to both story and chart will be posted here, as well. In the story are answers to some of your questions and links to invitation criteria, host hotel reservations and the Worlds FB page. Intermediate, Rec and Novice can also get invites with over points. There's no division distinction if you are an amateur male under age 40 other than playing Advanced at Worlds even if your rating is The tentative course schedule released today shows 14 Mecklenburg County courses will be used by 20 divisions of professional and amateur players.
It is anticipated there will be as many as 1, participants coming for five days of competition, plus field, skills and doubles events. Smith and Bradford, which are bristling with challenges. All Pro divisions will play three courses. Non-invited players will be able to register beginning May 1.
McDowell Street. Across the street from The Blake is Marshall Park, offering an expanse of green for relaxing, practice and catch discs. As usual, the pdga website lags behind Wasn't their fault. We jumped the gun on posting the chart; should have been hidden until released on PDGA.
The earlier the better! And I enjoy poking fun at the pdga website too much. I won't be able to go, in all probability. However, I did snag a Sparkle Teedevil to support the tourney. Suhweet, now we won't have to travel to and from the opposite sides of Charlotte and I'm glad we are playing "tougher" courses; are you going? Is there any idea which layout of Kilborne will be used for MA1?
This is especially the case with Kilborne, where now - with the added work on Skilborne pads and baskets - there are approximately 1,, ways to play the course. Guess I'll have to get out there and spend weeks practicing them all! Me and a friend have been talking to our parents about heading down. Assuming I recover from my broken ankle in the next few weeks, we're gonna book a place. You guys did all the work for me.
Thanks for posting the picture of the schedule. I am very excited about this. I am playing adv. And if we all do well enough to make it to finals -- ALL divisional finals will be played at Hornet's Nest!
Lol, 's of posts after the first announcement, then nothing after the courses were released last night. Watcha ya'll think? Looks like advanced is going to get a flavor of what wooded Piedmont of North Carolina DG is all about. Bring it on CA.
I think the first announcement caused an itch, and yesterday's scratched it. My thoughts, which are worth about nothing: 1 I can't believe pros are such whiners. I'm glad we made them play 5 diff courses in Boo hoo. Plus, they don't get either of the old guard Renny or Hornet's , nor either new par 66 Nevin or Angry. I like that there is no hole that lesser arms cannot birdie putt in the current matrix maybe 1, 2 and 6 at Hornets, 5,18 Angry Beaver, we dont know the kilborne layout.
Last years worlds had 40 holes that ' distance was extremely valuable because of the openess of Chili, Parma, Genessee Valley, and Ellison. This year's worlds will be like playing a more open longer Basil for 5 rounds. Bring your flick roller discs. Bradford would remind you of Hornets nest with no raised baskets.
Where is the whining, I have heard rumors but I want to see it for myself. Can you imagine the nerve of Charlotte asking pro's to hit a line or layup for a better upshot? It's been my experience that it's bad karma to say anything negative about the courses you've been assigned to play or how "easy" they are Lol, its Charlotte!
Nothing is easy if you cannot putt. Would liked to have got at least 1 round at Nevin but looks like 5 solid courses Reedy twice being used in the MM1 pool. Love the wooded holes and looking forward to getting there and playing. I love places I can use forehand rollers Banshee! Check out the Hornets Nest Clash video to see what can happen on this hole.
One team lays up while the others run at putts and blow up. It is SO open, just a bad photo there. Farways is only' long and 40' at its narrowest opening up as you get closer to the hole.
I'd be proud to have either of these courses for MA1! They are both tough and separate scores well. I think this is silly. I haven't played scrapyard, but I 2nd this sentment for eastway.
Scrapyard has a unique feel to it compared to the other Charlotte courses, I think. It plays almost entirely in the woods going either up hill, down hill, or traversing hillsides.
Also has some holes that have water carry if you play the longer tees. I enjoyed it a lot. I can see big score separation on that course if you can't hit your lines or manage elevation well. Lots of trees to hit. I don't think it's a bad course at all.
I think you would be suprised then. Our good advanced players average under out at Idlewilde. There is something different at Scrapyard I like it. I found Sugaw a lot easier than Scrapyard. I guess if you're a local I can see you dialing in the shots at Scrapyard, but the majority of players coming in for Worlds won't have that luxury. Do you guys know if they're playing the Kilborne layout or Skillborne? Courses that have multiple layout options like Kilborne, Renny, Nevin, Eastway and Hornets will be set with some sort of hybrid layout for Worlds combining some holes from the various layouts, tees and pin options.
Kilbourne will probably be a mix of longs and shorts. All skillbourne would be much too long of a round time-wise. I think it will be interesting to see the SSA for Idlewild. I think it is going to play with a higher SSA than you think Mark. While I have shot double digits under out there, if you are not hitting your lines there are a lot of bogeys out there. It is very tough to recover for a par if you hit an early tree.
While there are some short holes at Idlewild, if we are talking about the long pads, it is much, much harder to avoid taking bogeys than Kilbourne. Again though, it will depend what layout of Kilbourne will be played. If we are talking about the Clash layout mix of shorts and skillbourne then the SSAs will be closer. That would be somewhat disappointing if Renny was any other layout for the pros than the Gold course. The black course is just so much more boring. The only good short holes to play would be 1 short tee to long basket 2 long tee to short basket , 7 short basket , and 10 short basket.
Every other hole either has only one layout or is a much, much better hole on the Gold layout. The Angry Beaver is going to be a lot of fun. Good score separation. I really enjoyed Skillborne. I wouldn't mind playing all of it for Worlds, but if you must play some shorter holes then skip the long tees with the bamboo-wrapped trees in the middle of the fairways :P Hah hah.
I know they are playing mostly shorts at Nevin Pro's but I hope they play 1 and 12 long. Time my friend. Time is of the essence.
We have to get pools off the course in 3 hours of less. There is not enough time for Nevin's longs. We have to get pools off the course in 3 hours or less. Why the rush? What are the start times of the rounds? If they are going to complain, I want them to really have something to gripe about.
FYI - if you attempt to book at The Blake through a service like Orbitz or Travelocity it will say there are no rooms available. The reasoning behind a 3 hour round comes from feedback from comptitors from all the worlds I have attended and from those I have not. Worlds is more than just a competition. It is also a vacation for most of our visitors. The most frequent complaint from folks is that they did not have enough time to do the things they wanted without being rushed.
Indeed, all too frequently, there are players finihsing their last round without even being able to shower and relax a bit before rushing to the evenings festivities. So, if we get them off the courses in 3 hours or less when they are playing 2 rounds a day it is our hope that they return to their hotel no later than 5 and perhaps by 4 with plenty of time to prepare for the eveings events or perhaps go out and get another round of golf in on a course they aren't going to get to play or on one they need to practice more.
I don't know what the tee times will be but I could see a 9a. This also would build in time in case we have shhhhhh storm delays during a round. I don't know shoot from shinola, but I bet you get all kinds of whining, errrrrr I mean feedback, about not playing the biggest layouts. Especially from the "pros". Reckon you can't please everybody. Stan, hit us up when you have time to breathe, wild pine is a'waitin! We framed up 7 more pads for Bradford today.
I am going to try to get a day very soon. I want to play the front and see how it turned out and then we can flag the back really well so that you guys can clear it out. You are correct about the "feedback" and that we can't please everybody. The important thing to consider I think is that people will leave Charlotte with a new view of what the "biggest layouts" or the "best" courses are. It is, of course, totally subjective. I'm looking forward to it. When the weather gets a little nicer I'm going to head out and get some pictures of all the courses.
You are a beast Stan! I can't wait to meet you this summer. Please move to the Chicagoland. I just reviewed Renny and the Nest. After Bradford and RL Smith, his truck won't make it that far. You'll need to buy him a plane ticket for him and his mattock.
Yeah, born ' Thats crazy I would think 1 or 2 days you could stand to be the beast days Nevin Longs and Renny Gold not being played as Championship layouts is crazy It's the middle of summer the days are plenty long and Charlotte has such a high concentration of courses None of this makes sense and just seems backwards to me. Disc Golfers love Charlotte for the incredible disc golf courses not for the Nascar museum After the timing nightmare that involved Nockamixon including travel time and rain delays, we may not see a course with an SSA over 65 used again at Worlds.
Also, Nevin shorts has a lot of shared holes of the longs and in often cases, the long is a better hole and more of a challenge. Just cause these courses drop a few pars doesn't mean that it won't provide a lot of headaches. I was hoping some of the long courses parish - Renny Gold, Hornet's Nest Web, Nevin Long would be used with tee times for an entire division over the course of one day.
That would make a short day only hours of golf and give a very cool and unique experience to many who have never played that sort of course or that format in competition. I'm sure it was considered long and hard but I suppose the big problems with that format are 1 transportation issues for anyone sharing rides and 2 considerations for staffing the event for an entire day Afternoon thunderstorms are not uncommon in July.
Do both Yea, with so many courses, not as many 3 rounds per course as there was last year. The way the tentative schedule is now configured, there are no courses with three rounds on any day. I can't wait Will probably get some casual rounds in while I'm there. So do we know if the advanced guys are going to play the blues on most of these or if we are going to be playing the same tees as the pros? Just wondering for example hornets nest?
And others that have different layouts. There's only one layout being set up at each course for play by all divisions playing there with the exception of Eastway where there will be a shorter layout played by some divisions. And others that have different layouts Soon we will have "worlds" layout temporary signs for those of you who come down to practice. Youll know what tee or basket is for worlds. There may be plans for permanent tee signs too in the future.
Soon we will have "worlds" layout temporary signs for those of you who come down to practice. Just a thought here, but if the layout is posted 5 months before Worlds, won't that give the locals a significant advantage, even more then usual?
I guess that's the perks to hosting though. If the course only had one layout, then locals would already know what it is anyway. Yes, sounds like a great idea, Walker! Post them as soon as possible Seriously though the other side is that if someone wants to make a trip to Charlotte to practice before worlds, it would be beneficial for them to know the layout so they have as much time to plan a pre-worlds trip as possible.
Locals are 1. Already going to have an advantage and probably have played all the layouts 2. You could say the same thing about the courses Kilborne is probably the course where there will be the most ability to vary what layout will be played.
Hey, for anybody in the know: Are all divisions playing same days i. Open finals and Am finals on the same day? My reason for asking is I'll be on the crew for the DVD, but I assumed that the AM's would finish up a day or two ahead of the pros because let's be honest: most of the gallery at this tournament is made up of Am players.
So I was wondering about the tentative schedule - would I be able to play AM's and still work the semi- and final rounds for pros? Or is everything happening at the same time? For both Ams and Pros the Semis and Finals are scheduled on Saturday, with the Semis occurring on four different courses. All Finals are on Hornet's Nest. You could maybe play Ams in the six prelim rounds thru Friday and just not play Saturday if you make the cut to the semis.
If you make the cut and don't play Saturday, it's not a DNF. You still get last place among those who made the cut.
I'm not into tournament play as much as I used to be. I'd have to qualify which means playing in a bunch of tourneys. I missed Qualifying by seven points Does anyone know if they think they will run out of spots before the open registration days? It's anybody's guess right now, but there's no real history of the Worlds filling during qualifier registration.
But then, there's no history of a course Worlds, either. Open registration is slated to begin May 1, so you may want to be Johnny-on-the-spot at a.
Are the singles rounds going to start on Tuesday or Monday? I know they're almost always Tues, K-Zoo in '08 was an exception. Has that decision been made yet? Go there for all the latest news about worlds.
They also have the lists of both pros and ams invited to play this year. So check them out. I will continue to update the World's facebook page as information comes out. Ashleigh and I are on the invite list, though I doubt we'll be able to take the time off to make it. I'm on the list, but after expenses getting there, I don't think I'd be able to pay for lodging that many days. I'm invited..
Would love to make it after experiencing Worlds in my backyard last year.. See you there from the podium! What are you gonna be doing up there I am not surprised I got the invite, I knew it was coming for a while now.
I can't wait until online registration opens. In the mean time, trying to get all my friends who were also invited to come as well. Colorado is a long ways away but I have a good feeling about our peeps this year. Sugaw Creek disc golf course is the only disc golf course that I have been to where I have been offered BJs for crack or crack money more often than not and that Red Roof Inn is like two blocks away from the course.
Hopefully there are a lot of disc golfers there for safety purposes. If that is a rough part of town, near the university, where are the parts of town that we want to be in? The host hotel is downtown but more spendy than I care to pay. Photo: PDGA. The PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships came to a bittersweet end on Saturday afternoon in Charlotte with semifinal rounds in the morning and finals that followed shortly after for those fortunate enough to make the cut s.
There are many great stories to be told from the action on Saturday including several divisions that, despite having played well over holes over the last five days, still needed a nine-hole finals showdown to determine a winner.
By the time Stanley arrived at Renaissance Park she was already ahead by 13 while Parker led by eight. Both Stanley and Parker went home with their trophies with ease. Despite starting the finals loop two strokes behind then leader David Frazer , Mark Hauser pulled off the lone victory by shooting an even-par 29 for the finals.
