This is an inspiring educational program taught each week by 2 volunteers, and a Professor and Author from Seattle University. The rules for engagement are defined and inmates agree to a code of conduct including confidentiality, allowing everyone an opportunity to speak, respecting each other as well as the instructors, listening to each other, and sharing together. Themes of pain are common as inmates reflect and allow themselves to feel their truth, express themselves and tell their stories through this creative writing skills class.
The process of sharing and writing has proven to be a catalyst for change and therapeutic tool in the recovery process of personal healing. The women write poems, stories, and personal themes, expressing pain and abuse from childhood and family, past relationships, and traumatic experiences in their lives. Celebrate Recovery: Christ-centered, 12 step recovery program for anyone struggling with hurt, pain or addiction of any kind.
English as a Second Language: In collaboration with our local college, monolingual students are provided English as a Second Language instructions and testing. Hepatitis C Education Providing education and information about male and female sexuality, healthy and safe sex practices, human biology, personal hygiene, infectious diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV and AIDS exposure, life threatening illnesses, is the primary focus of these classes.
Slide presentations, group discussions, examples, and question answer format are used to help address the issues raised in the workshops, which makes it easy for the inmates to participate and learn, in a safe and supportive learning environment. High School Completion: Local public-school teachers provide high school instruction and provide high school credit to individuals years of age.
Upon completion of high school curriculum, a high school diploma is awarded. Adults demonstrate competencies in reading, writing and math contextualized in science, history, government, occupational studies, and digital literacy. Incarcerated Veterans Reentry Services: Reentry case management services that offers alternatives to jail and referral to housing, employment services, and treatment. Case Managers are cleared for jail access and meet one on one with incarcerated Veterans to assess and determine their individual needs on a case by case basis.
Job Training: In collaboration with a local non-profit, participants receive instruction and practice in the areas of communication, interviewing, resume writing, dialogue regarding their criminal history, and writing. King County Superior Court Parents for Parents Program: Peer education about Dependency Court involvement and guidance for incarcerated parents through the process of regaining custody of their children. The Parent for Parent Program focuses on wrap around services to support Moms and Dads with housing, parenting classes, relationship skills training and counseling, and emphasis on family reunification.
Release Planning: General population resource information groups. Read to Me Program: To create or strengthen a bond between a parent and a and incarcerated parent, the parent receives information regarding the importance of reading to their children.
Completion of the course provides the parent to record a video of the parent reading a book to their child. The recording is sent to their child along with a copy of the book.
Shanti — Empathic Emotional Support Program: Social workers offer emotional support to participants in need of grief processing.
The sole focus of Shanti Case Managers is to engage through the learned art of listening to hear and understand, and to provide emotional support to inmates by creating and developing a relationship of mutual respect based in sincere trust. Patient confidentiality is an integral part of the relationship between patient and volunteer, per HIPPA regulations.
These emotional support services are provided every weekend when Shanti Case Managers visit one on one with inmates in the Attorney Conference Room on each floor. Tutoring Program: In collaboration with Adult Basic Education teachers tutoring is provided to students who require one on one learning for the purposes of GED testing, HS Diploma credit completion, ESL, or for increasing literacy skills for successful classroom participation.
Various Faith-based Groups: Faith based volunteers provide religious services, religious based guidance, spiritual support, prayer and meditation, reading materials and individual counseling. Various religious texts, brochures and reading materials are distributed to inmates. Yoga Behind Bars: Movement, breathing and stretching are used to teach participants tools that can enhance their peace, tranquility and behavior. These group sessions work under the goal of improved stress management.

Our community corrections programs strive to use evidence-based practices that promote pro-social behaviors and lifestyles. Our alternatives and services are available to persons charged with an offense who are incarcerated or who are facing incarceration. In order to be eligible to participate, a person must be ordered to the program by the court. The court may use the alternative programs pretrial and after conviction.
